On April 29th, six amazing kids from Deer Park Middle School won big at the Math is Cool State Masters Competition held in Moses Lake, WA, taking first place in their division! The competition, hosted by Academics are Cool, is an invitational math competition for grades 4-12 in the state of Washington. Participants are invited to compete in the Math is Cool Masters if they score top 4 in their school and if their school wins top 8 in their division during a previous competition.
Andrea Dean coached and accompanied the team in Moses Lake, watching as the students showcased their incredible math skills. Individual placers included Evan Alexander, who placed 4th, James Elser, who placed 6th, and Kason Dean, who placed 7th. Other team members, Suja Cue-Hernandez, Jesse Schurger, and Camden Rich, also contributed to the team's success.
The competition consists of a 35-question, 40-minute test, which accounted for approximately 90% of a student's score, as well as an 8-question mental math test, which accounted for approximately 10% of the student's score. In addition, teams were scored based on their performance in various team contests, including a 10-question test, a multiple-choice team contest, a relay competition, and a college knowledge bowl.
Deer Park Middle School's students excelled in all areas of the competition, showcasing their math prowess and teamwork. The team's success is a testament to their hard work, their love of mathematics, and the great things teachers are doing each day in classrooms throughout DPSD.
We're incredibly proud of these students and congratulate them on their impressive achievement!
